Development and evaluation of online tests of executive dysfunction as a marker of Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in UK Service Veterans

This study will explore the link between executive control and variability in PTSD in UK Veterans using computer tests.

Aim

The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate the sensitivity of computer-based tests of executive control to variability in PTSD symptoms in UK ex-Service personnel.

Method

The study will incorporate laboratory-based and online experimental tasks to obtain behavioural and physiological (pupillometry, EEG) measures of performance on computer-based task of executive control.

Research questions

  • Can computer-based tests of sustained attention and inhibition be used to obtain accurate and reliable measures of components of executive control?
  • Does performance on computer-based tests of executive function predict variability in PTSD symptoms in UK Veterans measured using clinical scales and self-report questionnaires?
  • Can computer-based tests of executive control be used to increase the sensitivity and accuracy of PTSD diagnosis and treatment evaluation?

Sample / Participants

The study aims to recruit a sample of 100 UK service veterans for campus-based sessions at the University of Leicester. An additional sample of up to 300 Veterans will be invited to participate in an online task.
