Featuring talks from –
16:00 - Dr. Eric Spikol, Stress Trauma and Related Conditions Research Centre, Queen's University Belfast – ‘Hitting the wall: Barriers to care mediate the relationship between trauma exposure and PTSD in Northern Ireland veterans’ (16:00)
Individuals seeking treatment for PTSD can face significant barriers to care and this is especially true for ‘hidden populations’ such as Veterans resident in Northern Ireland (NI). Data from N=657 Veterans were taken from the Northern Ireland Veterans Health and Wellbeing Study (NIVHWS) and used in a series of mediation models to explore the relationships between trauma, barriers to care, and PTSD symptomatology. The results of this study will be presented in the webinar, with discussion of the impact on research, practice, and policy in NI.
16:30 - Dr Mary Keeling, Research Manager of the FiMT Research Centre and Research Leader, RAND Europe– ‘Body image and psychosocial wellbeing among UK military personnel and veterans who sustained appearance-altering injuries’
A moderate but significant number of military personnel sustained appearance altering injuries (e.g., limb-loss, scaring) during military service. Research with civilians indicates that a changed appearance following injury can affect psychosocial wellbeing; little is known about the impact of appearance-altering injuries among military populations. In this presentation, Mary will share the outcomes from the UNITS study; a mixed methods multi-study project which aimed to understand the body image, psychosocial and appearance-related experiences of UK military personnel and veterans who sustained AAI, and to determine whether existing interventions for civilian adults with AAI could be suitable or adapted to meet the potential support needs of military personnel, veterans, and their families
